The youth committee would like to encourage all youth members to become involved in the American Satin Breeders Association youth contests. We strive to offer a wide range of contests so that each one of you will find one that interests you. These contests are held each year at the annual all satin show. This year’s show will be held in Jefferson, Wisconsin. Some of these contests are designed so that those members who can’t attend the NASS will still be able to participate; attendance is required for other contests. Please pay close attention to all rules noted below.
ROYALTY CONTEST
Contestants will participate in the Judging, Written Test and one other contest.
The total points of these 3 contests will determine the winner. Royalty
contestants are divided into age groups, age determined by the last day
of the NASS:
Lord and Lady: Under 9 years of age. Note: Lord and Lady Contestants will not be required to participate in the judging contest but will be asked to speak to our judges about one of their rabbits.
Prince and Princess: Age 9-11
Duke and Duchess: Age 12-14
King and Queen: Age 15-18
CRAFT CONTEST
1. The topic must be about some aspect of SATIN or MINI SATIN rabbits.
2. Exhibit may be any type craft.
3. Name, date, state, age, and title of craft must be present on back of
craft
4. Scoring will be based on the following: Neatness (45 pts.)
Creativity (45 pts.) Age appropriate (10 pts.)
EDUCATIONAL DISPLAY
1. The topic must be about some aspect of SATIN or MINI SATIN rabbits.
2. Display should be informative as well as creative.
3. They may feature pictures, wording, or other appropriate items to support
the subject of the display.
4. Duplication from previous year’s entry may not be entered.
5. Name, date, state, age, and title of display must be present on back of
display.
6. Scoring will be based on the following: Organization of Materials (20
pts), Presentation and Neatness (20 pts). Effectiveness (educates, keeps
readers attention and entertains) (40 pt.). Use of Space (20 pts.)
RABBIT JUDGING CONTEST
1. Evaluate 3 classes of rabbits; both Satins and Mini Satins will be represented
during the contest.
2. Contestants in the royalty contest must participate in this contest. (Exception:
Lord and Lady contestants)
WRITTEN TEST
1. Contestants in the royalty contest must take part in the written test.
2. The test will include questions on general rabbit knowledge along with
knowledge specific to the Satin and Mini Satin breeds.
SPEECH
1. Participants may choose to use visual aids.
2. Topic must be specific to the Satin or Mini Satin breeds.
3. The length of the speech should be from 4-6 minutes.
4. Judges may ask questions on the speech.
5. Judges will receive a copy of the outline of the speech to know the general
topic.
6. Contestants may use note cards. Excessive reference may be a point deduction.
7. Evaluation of speeches will be based on the following:
a. Content 30%
b. Organization of material 20%
c. Presentation: 30%
d. Language 10%
e. Voice/pitch 20%
f. Eye contact 10%
g. Poise 5%
h. Use of allotted time 5%
WRITING
1. Exhibit may be an essay, poem or short story.
2. Subject should be related to the Satin or Mini Satin breeds.
3. Contestants need not attend the NASS, non-attendees may enter using the
following steps
a. Mail exhibit to or e-mail Youth Committee Chairperson
b. Mailings must be postmarked by April 10 or e-mail by April 20. I will
respond back to your e-mail that I have received the exhibit.
4. A cover page should include name, address, phone, birth date, grade in
school, word count calculation and email address (if you have one). A plastic
cover is advised. All essays must be typewritten and use 12 point type and
Times New Roman font (not bold).
5. Pages should be numbered.
6. Exhibits will be judged on the following: based on 100 point at 20 % per
category.
a. Content of exhibit.
b. Effectiveness (educates, keeps the attention of reader, and entertains
the reader).
c. Length
i. Lord & Lady 175-250 words.
ii. Prince & Princess 250-400 words.
iii. Duke & Duchess 400-550 words.
iv. King & Queen 550-800 words.
d. Style (grammar, sentence structure, types of sentences, spelling, and
punctuation).
e. Organization of exhibit (orderly, ease of following and reading).
PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST - Candid shots of shows, individuals, or etc.
1. Photos may be framed or matted
2. Digital entries on photo quality paper.
3. Pictures should have been taken in the past calendar year.
4. Judged on the following criteria:
a. 50% composition, creative look, uniqueness, and communicative power.
b. 50 % Color, sharpness, exposure, cropping and technical quality.
5. Gloss paper is not recommended.
6. Exhibitors not attending NASS may enter in this contest.
a. Mail exhibit to Youth Committee Chairperson
b. Mailings must be postmarked by April 10.
7. Name, date, state, age, and title of photograph(s), and date taken must
be present on back of exhibit.
THE FOLLOWING CONTESTS ARE PRE-ENTRY BY APRIL 1, 2011
TECHNOLOGY CONTEST – Exhibits would use technology to communicate
information on the Satin or Mini Satin breeds. Examples of entries would
be a PowerPoint Presentation, Web Pages, Spreadsheet, Brochure, etc.
1. Topic would be some aspect of Satins or Mini Satins.
2. Judging breakdown.
a. 50 % content
b. 25 % originality
c. 15 % technical merit
d. 10 % affective use of technology.
